New Rotation Strategy Unveiled
On August 14, 2025, Phillies manager Rob Thomson announced a strategic shift to a six-man rotation starting that weekend. This decision came as Aaron Nola prepared to return from the injured list to pitch in the series finale against the Nationals. Nola, 32, had been sidelined due to a right ankle sprain and last took the mound in the majors on May 14.
The new rotation included Nola alongside Ranger Suárez, Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez, Jesús Luzardo, and Taijuan Walker. Suárez was set to pitch against the Mariners on Monday, adding depth to the team’s strategy. Thomson hinted that future adjustments might occur, although he did not confirm how long the six-man system would remain in use.
The Phillies’ rotation, which had logged the most innings in MLB at 687 1/3, needed this adjustment to help fatigued starters recover. Notably, Sánchez and Wheeler had already surpassed 150 and 144 innings, respectively. Nola demonstrated his readiness during rehab, boasting a 2.19 ERA with 17 strikeouts over 12 1/3 innings at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
